  • Dr. P.S Reddy appealed for Donation to Indo Artificial Heart Projects.

    Dear Friends,

Two years ago, I wrote to you that on March 15 2023 I will be reaching the age of 85 years. By that time, I intended to complete the Extended TETRA project for the 50000 population at a cost of 120000 per year for 3 years. I sought your support for it and promised not to beg, personally, for money from anyone after that. However, the organization may continue to do so with new beggars with new begging bowls. Although you were generous enough to donate the first 120000 for the first year for TETRA, it could not be implemented and funds were not utilized. Therefore, Last year I did not approach for donations.

However, you know that I have been implementing the Artificial heart project for the last 5 years. It was primarily funded by institutions like CBIT Hyderabad, KITS, Warangal, Sreenidhi Institute of Sciences and Technology, Hyderabad, and Laxven Engineering Systems, Hyderabad. Presently our project is focused on reengineering Centrimag Motor, Pump, and Controller. The Motor is almost developed by Ramesh Reddy of Laxven systems with his own internal resources but due to the lack of one critical part from Zurich, it remains incomplete. I and Ramesh Reddy plan to visit Zurich in June-July to obtain them. The Pump has been developed by the joint effort of CBIT, Kits, and Sreenidhi engineering institutes. I am glad to inform you that Rugveda our junior-most engineer impressed the international faculty with his accomplishments so much that he is admitted to Ph.D. program at the University of Pittsburgh. He will continue to work on our project. The Motor is re-engineered by our engineering team and passed the Bench Testing for hydrodynamics and Homolysis. A mould is being made by Kartiya Dies and Moulds to make prototypes. It has already undergone few iterations.

There are two critical elements to testing newly re-engineered equipment before clinical testing. One is Bench testing and another one is Animal testing. We have perfected the Bench Testing system and the setup is at AIG Hospital. Training for Animal Experimentation is being imparted by the experts of the Animal experimentation facility of the University of Pittsburgh to Palamur Bioscience Laboratories, near Mahbubnagar. Five experiments on sheep have been already completed. A few more need to be done. Training is imparted using a commercial unit purchased by Ramesh Reddy. I plan to take a group of experts from the University of Pittsburgh, Cornell University, and the University of Pennsylvania to train Palamur scientists in taking care of an animal for 7 days which is living on mechanical devices. Dr. James Long, one of the foremost cardiac surgeons in heart transplants and implantation of artificial hearts will lead the team. I am budgeting expenses of 100K for preclinical testing. Since we have not embarked on TETRA project for logistic reasons, I request you to donate the amount promised by some for the TETRA project and others to donate for this mission. As promised in the past, myself and Madhu Mohan will be donating 20K each.

While this is my last call to you for donations, it will be my first call to MIMS Alumni. I want MIMS alumni to know that a similar call made 41 years ago resulted in the birth of MIMS and their presence in this country. Your presence in this country is the fulfillment of our dream. I hope in the future you will be able to repeat the history of “Giving Back”. I hope you will be able to carry this mantle to its logical conclusion and make an artificial heart available to every needy in India and globally. The humble beginning could be made now with an initial donation of 500 to 5000 $. No amount is too small.
